January 15, 2009--San Jose placed fifteenth in the list of fattest cities for 2009. Men’s Fitness has released their 11th annual survey of the Fittest and Fattest Cities in The United States. The survey takes many health predictors into consideration, including amount of fitness centers and sports stores, number of fast food restaurants, nutrition, sports participation, TV viewing, air quality, access to health care, state and local initiatives, and more. According to the survey, which breaks down health predictors like a report card, San Jose received an "F" in the following categories: fitness and sports centers, parks and open space, city recreational facilities, and access to healthcare. The city did have some high scores in terms of state initiatives and geography. (1) The state initiative score most likely reflects Governor Schwarzenegger’s California Obesity Prevention Plan.

Other "fat cities" in California are San Diego and L.A.-Long Beach. East coast city Miami, Florida is number one on the list. The state of California also has three cities in the "fittest city" list: San Francisco, Sacramento, and Fresno. (1)
