Research Converging in Favor of New Approach to Weight Loss
May 9, 2008--A complete review of trends in weight loss research suggests the value of a multi-disciplinary and collaborative approach to weight loss, according to the Edward Zbella, M.D., Medical Director of |medi|. The use of several proven weight management strategies in combination with a personal, team approach appears to offer the greatest likelihood of success.
NBC's hit show The Biggest Loser may not depict everyday life for most people, but the producers were right in showing successful weight loss in an environment where individuals work with others to change their lifestyles on several fronts, among them nutrition, fitness, relationships and accountability, according to Zbella.
"The latest research suggests we need to leave behind the idea that weight loss is about an isolated person deciding to cut calories. That won't solve the problem. If we want to overcome the U.S. epidemic of overweight and obesity, as well as the associated health problems, we have to understand broader concepts like wellness and accountability," said Dr. Zbella. "Most people won't do this on their own. They need training and ongoing support," he added.
Speaking about the weight loss industry, Zbella said, "Weight loss programs should be designed by medical, nutritional, fitness and behavioral experts. They should be implemented with adequate medical supervision and with access to appropriate prescriptions and nutritional supplements. Healthcare providers should also be staffing and training their teams to deliver the acceptance, encouragement and support that are shown to help patients achieve success."
In line with Dr. Zbella's comments, |medi| is enhancing its team of wellness experts on staff and increasing training of its clinics' staff, who provide a medically supervised program under the oversight of a physician.
The mission of |medi| is to equip everyone to reach and maintain their personal health goals. They can assist in shedding unwanted pounds rapidly and permanently.
