The University of Tampa is located near the heart of downtown Tampa. The university's main building, Plant Hall, is rich with history. It is the former Tampa Bay Hotel, which once hosted celebrities ranging from Teddy Roosevelt and Babe Ruth to the Queen of England. Today, Plant Hall and its towering minarets are a symbol of the city of Tampa and its history.
The University of West Florida, founded in 1965, is the sixth university in the State University System of Florida. UWF has four colleges and over 9,000 students.
Founded in 1991, Florida Gulf Coast University is the tenth state university. FCGU is rapidly taking off in terms of academic admissions, campus expansion, and athletics.
